Built in the 1770s, Smithfield Plantation was the home of the wealthy Preston family for centuries, remaining occupied by the progeny of this family until the mid-19th century. Famous people including James Patton Preston, Virginia's governor between 1816 and 1819, and William Ballard Preston, Secretary of the Navy for President Taylor. Visitors to the home are taken on a guided tour of the mansion, learning about the rooms and their past visitors and inhabitants as well as seeing many incredible antique items. Located just west of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, the historic property is easy to reach for anyone visiting the university or passing through Blacksburg.
Open Apr - early Dec: Mon. - Tue. and Thurs. - Sat. 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sun. 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Closed Wed.; Closed early Dec - Mar. Tours run every half hour.
Adults $7; Children (12+) and College Students $4; Children (5-11) $3; Children 4 and under are free.
